The research of classical guitarist Gregory Coleman and his groups performances came to the attention of the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society, who funded a grant to record a music CD. Tony Forster, the Societys president, whose ancestors owned and lived in the Mission San Juan Capistrano in the 1850s, was able to obtain the Serra Chapel at the Mission for the recording site.
The Serra Chapel is the oldest building in California, dating from 1776.
Historical precedence demanded our presence. When Alfred Robinson visited the Mission Santa Barbara in 1827, he observed:
From this [vestry], a door led into the church
The musicians attached to the choir were practicing, and played some very fine airs
It was not unusual, both there and at the churches of other missions, to hear during the mass the most lively dancing tunes.
This CD recording is a superb production, with beautiful art work and photography. It is a must-have for any California history buff, but will be appreciated by everyone who loves beautiful and exciting music.
